Van Floor System: drop in van conversion kit with insulation and radiant underfloor heating

When we first began designing our floor system we had several goals. We knew the floor system had to include an effective layer of insulation, beyond R5 with no thermal bridging. The floor must be mould and mildew resistant and as waterproof as possible. There had to be wiring loops integrated to reduce the complexity of wire runs through the van. We knew we wanted to integrate an inflow gradient heating loop to ensure the van could handle the colder winter temperatures here in Canada. All of this had to be made in an adaptable modular system that worked with any layout. And our biggest goal of all; the whole system had to be easy enough to install that anyone could do it.

From Pixels to Plywood: The power of virtual development in van building.

A big focus of Habitat’s development has, counter intuitively, been virtual. For a van build company, at first this seems quite strange; this approach is more common for companies developing apps or websites.

For us, laying this digital foundation correctly has been key to crafting better products. Using this digital foundation allows us to rapidly design and test ideas internally, and, externally this allows us to design entire vans remotely, then flat pack and ship the build as a kit.

Sage, our 2017 High Roof Ford Transit

Sage was our third van conversion, and one build under special circumstances. The world was mid-pandemic and we decided to spend some time in our home country of the UK. Wanting a project, and also hopefully a way to travel once the many restrictions lifted, we got to work creating our ideal tiny home. We did eventually end up traveling the UK in this van, and explored all the way up through the Scottish Highlands to John O Groats, and down through Cornwall to Land’s End. We spent time in the Peak District, the Lake District and in Wales before eventually selling Sage, and returning to Canada.
